How the salary-to-hourly conversion works

The formula is straightforward: hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year). With the U.S. default of 40 hours per week × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours per year, a $52,000 salary works out to $25/hour. Drop hours-per-week to 35 and the same $52,000 becomes $28.57/hour; that's why part-time roles often advertise the salary while full-time roles advertise the hourly.

When the simple formula doesn't fit

The 2,080 default assumes you work all 52 weeks at the listed hours. If you take 2 weeks of unpaid leave, your effective hourly is higher than the calculator shows because you worked fewer total hours for the same pay. If your employer treats vacation as paid time off (you get paid for the week, you just don't work it), the calculator default is correct.

Salaried roles also often involve more than the listed hours-per-week — many salaried jobs run 45-50 hours in practice. If you want to know your effective hourly based on hours actually worked, use that higher number instead of 40.

The hourly rate this calculator produces is gross — before taxes, FICA, retirement contributions, health insurance, or any other deductions come out. How do you convert salary to hourly?

Divide the annual salary by the total hours worked per year (hours per week × weeks per year). With the U.S. default of 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours, $52,000 salary = $25/hour.

Does the calculation include paid time off?

The default 52 weeks treats every week as paid (PTO counted at the same effective rate). If you want the hourly rate based on actual hours WORKED only, reduce the weeks per year by your annual unpaid leave.

Is the converted hourly rate gross or net?

What's the difference between salary and hourly pay?

Salaried roles pay a fixed amount per pay period regardless of hours worked (within reason, subject to FLSA exempt-vs-nonexempt classification). Hourly roles pay the rate × hours actually worked, with overtime kicking in over 40 hours/week under federal FLSA. Salaried-exempt employees don't usually get overtime; hourly and salaried-nonexempt employees do.
