Washington paystub law
Washington Revised Code Chapter 49.46 (Minimum Wage Act) and § 49.46.020 require employers to provide each employee with a written or electronic statement of wages and deductions for each pay period. The statement must show hours, rate, gross, itemized deductions, net wages, and pay period dates. The Washington State Department of Labor and Industries enforces violations. Washington also has the Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program premium that appears on most stubs, plus the Long-Term Services and Supports (WA Cares) premium for most workers. Washington has no state income tax.
Seattle's rental market is one of the tightest in the country outside NYC and SF — South Lake Union / Capitol Hill / downtown landlords typically require 3× rent gross + 2 stubs + employment verification, with some buildings requiring 3.5× or higher. Tech employees at Amazon, Microsoft (Redmond), Meta, and Google produce institutional paystubs all Seattle property managers recognize immediately. Aerospace employees at Boeing (Everett, Renton) follow similar patterns. The lack of state income tax means net pay is higher relative to gross than in California or Oregon.
